FAQ
Q
: What kind of apps are you seeking to attract with this contest?
A
: We are primarily looking to attract Qt SDK based apps and games, as well as high-end 3D/HD graphics intensive native Symbian games. We are seeking apps and games that are designed for the N8 or optimized for the N8. We are seeking apps that make extensive use of available Qt SDK and Symbian^3 platform SDK APIs including Qt Mobility APIs 1.1, OpenGL ES Qt and native APIs, or push notifications for example.
Q
: Are non-Qt apps eligible for the contest?
A
: Yes. All application types (Qt, native Symbian, WRT, Flash Lite, Java) that can be published to Ovi Store for N8 are eligible.
Q
: Are some application types preferred over others?
A
: The contest is seeking the best N8 experiences for consumers in the USA, Canada, and globally. Consumers in the USA will decide (based on what they download and purchase from Ovi Store) which applications will be selected as Category Finalists. While native apps as a general rule provide a better user experience, all application types are treated equally in the judging process.
Q
: Are Ovi App Wizard apps eligible?
A
: No. This is a contest about innovation, and we are looking for original, unique, and innovative applications. Ovi App Wizard is a template based solution enabling publishers to quickly distribute their standardized content such as RSS feeds, via Ovi Store.
Q
: Why are some countries voided/excluded from the contest?
A
: The contest is run under U.S. law. Some countries and regions present significant legal restrictions above and beyond U.S law that have prevented the contest from being made available there. In addition, the contest is void in any country or area that is subject to a U.S. government embargo, or that has been designated by the U.S. government as a "terrorist supporting" country, and where prohibited or otherwise restricted by law.
Q
: Do apps have to be published exclusively for N8, or can they be published for other Symbian^3 devices as well, such as C7 or E7?
A
: Device distribution in Ovi Publish must include N8. Apps can be published for other Symbian^3 devices, but all apps must be designed for and fully tested on the N8.
Q
: Are international/global apps eligible?
A
: Yes, as long as the country distribution includes the USA.
Q
: Do apps have to pass Ovi Store QA by the entry deadline?
A
: No. Apps must be submitted to Ovi Store QA as part of the Ovi Publishing process by the entry deadline, but do not have to pass Ovi Store QA by the entry deadline.
Q
: Are Qt 4.7 and Qt Quick apps eligible?
A
: Yes. Qt SDK 1.1 apps are eligible and can be submitted as of March 1st, but will not be processed by Ovi Publish until the final release of the Qt SDK 1.1 is available.
Q
: How do I update an entry if I have improved or made changes to an existing entry?
A
: You would submit the update to Ovi Publish via the Ovi Publish process. As long as the Ovi Store content item ID remains unchanged, you do not have to re-submit the app via the contest app submission form.
Q
: If I have a set of apps that have a common UI and feature/function, but connect to different back-end data feeds or databases such that different information is presented to the consumer from one app to the next, are all of them eligible for the contest?
A
: Provided that all of the apps are entered into the appropriate and same category, have a consistent naming structure such that they are identifiable as a set or group, and that they provide the consumer with unique/different information from app to app (for example travel guides for different countries) , all are eligible for the contest.
Q: Smart Installer currently supports only Qt SDK 1.0 apps. If I have a Qt SDK 1.1 Beta app, should I use the Smart Installer or submit the SIS file without the Smart Installer?
A
: Qt SDK 1.1 Beta apps should be packaged with the Nokia Smart Installer as documented at
http://wiki.forum.nokia.com/index.php/Guide_to_Publishing_Qt_Applications_to_the_Ovi_Store
. Although the documentation currently refers only to the Qt SDK 1.0, Qt SDK 1.1 Beta apps should be packaged with the Smart Installer according to those instructions.
