Congratulations to the winners of the Calling All Innovators Africa 2009 contest, a competition that challenged developers to create applications and services that are appealing to the African continent.

First place and winner of USD 85,000
Afridoctor by 20fourlabs: helps make healthcare affordable and accessible to the people in Africa. It includes for instance a “snap diagnosis” system which allows people to submit photos of ailments and remotely receive advice from a panel of professionals. The app also helps in locating doctors, clinics, and other health-related services.

Second place and winner of USD 10,000
That Roach Game – South Africa by Breakdesign: a fun game in which the player’s task is to squash bugs – that speak 4 different South African languages! The application makes great use of the device features, like the touch screen.

Third place and winner of USD 10,000
Sasol e.Birds by Coolideas: an intuitive interactive electronic field guide to the birds of Southern Africa. It includes images, audio, and textual content with a smart search facility, allowing for easy identification of species.

Fourth place and winner of USD 10,000
MrSNAKE by Simon Botes: the world’s first mobi guide to snakes of South Africa. The app allows you to search your region to determine snakes habiting in your area and get detailed information to identify snakes and vital comments about them.
